melcreada: (utena ring)
It feels so weird to be posting again. It's been 7 months...wow.

So, bad stuff first. My wonderful father passed away in April of this year. He fought that cancer for years before it finally got the better of him. And although I miss him like crazy and think about him every day, part of me is glad that the battle is over. Those last few months were so hard - anyone who has watched a loved one in pain knows what I mean. You would gladly cut an arm off if it meant they wouldn't suffer.

Everyone has been strong and supportive and my brothers and sister and I are focusing on making sure my mom is okay. She's a pretty tough cookie, but I worry about her being by herself too much. Everyone is so busy and it's hard to remember sometimes in the day to day rush.

But lest you think this is going to be a completely maudlin entry, I actually do have a couple of good things to report. First, my brother and his wife had their second baby last week, a sweet little girl they named Isabella. So tiny and adorable. Cannot wait to dress her in a million cute outfits, LOL.

The second piece of big news is that I am going to India for work. !!! I will be in Pune for 10 weeks starting in mid August and ending at the end of October. The coolest part is that I was able to tack my vacation on after that trip so I will take 10 days to visit Nepal and Bhutan, which are two of my bucket list countries. !!! The best part is that my company is paying for all the airline flights, so I am saving quite a bit there. The only bad part is that I will be doing this all solo. JP is not really up to it, physically, and we are not up to bringing him over, financially. So. Boo. But...India! Nepal! Bhutan! I am really excited and so glad I got to tell my dad about the trip before he passed. He was really excited for me.

Anyway, I guess that is enough for now. No idea if I will try to keep this up or not. We only have one computer in the house now and it's impossible to type on my iPad and the crummy excuse for a keyboard that you can attach to it.

But I'll try to check in semi-regularly...I hope y'all are doing well. Sending good vibes and happy thoughts out into the ether...
melcreada: (ouran totally made of awesome)
I need to post more often...I miss everyone!!!! I'm sad LJ is not the busy, thriving community it once was, but I don't think I will leave it. I try to get on Facebook but I just can't like it the way I like LJ. And don't get me started on Twitter! My verbosity will not be bound by 140 characters! LOL...

Work has been going well. Although we are ridiculously busy and I feel like my head is going to explode, my boss recognized me in a great way - she arranged for me to get tickets and passes to the company suite for the Spurs vs. Lakers basketball game last night. It was a great! Of course, my boss' new boss was supposed to be hosting, so JP and I dressed up and I was mentally preparing myself to be in business mode...but then he didn't show up while we were there! So, we ate fajitas and blondies, had a couple of sodas, and went to watch the game from our plaza-level seats. And yay, we won! So much fun.

Today, we are packing up the car and driving to Mustang Island (North Padre) for a couple of days in the sun! See y'all on the flip side...
melcreada: (geisha glasses)
Tooth fixed, thanks to my sister getting me into her office first thing this morning. Just a little sore from the shot and from when the dentist knocked my upper molars with one of his instruments while trying to test the strength of the composite he had just glued to my broken tooth. Ouch.

Next up, must take Jeep in to be looked at. I had to drive on the highway today and I couldn't go over 55 without the Jeep vibrating like mad. I thought the drivers behind me were going to follow me and kill me with speed limit signs (city highway speed is 65).Now I just have to hope and hope some more that the fix will not be ridiculous amounts of money.

Speaking of which, they announced our yearly bonus: 18.4%!!! Thank goodness!!! This money will go a long way towards paying down my credit card and paying closing costs on my refinance. 2012, I take back everything I said about you...

I have (finally) started watching Black Butler. I guess there must be something wrong with me because I am not getting into it like I normally would. Can anyone tell me if it gets better after the first few episodes? I'm really disappointed in myself because this show seemed like something right up my alley. I have also been watching Kodomo No Omocha, which I had started some time ago but stopped for some reason. I am enjoying it, though. I like the throwback feel to it.

Big, big hugs to [livejournal.com profile] annearchy. You are my hero, woman.
melcreada: (bitch needs to man the fudge up)

So...happy post...

Good things that are happening:

- Tomorrow is my last day of work until next Wednesday (hooray!)
- In spite of this horrible economy, we are still getting a bonus (double hooray!)

OMG, is anyone else watching American Idol? I feel like a total patsy, but that last singer with his brain-damaged fiance just made me bawl. Seeing the judges be all human, too... *sniffle* Ugh. This show.

Everything else I am hearing about is bad - violent protests in Egypt, the 11 police officers shot in a 24-hour period, Social Security trust funds drying up way before I will ever retire, yadda yadda yadda. I am counteracting all these bad vibes by listening to Cat Steven's Peace Train on an endless loop. Pointless, perhaps, but it makes me feel better. It also reminds me of the Dreaded Ex, who loved this song, but the memory my brain keeps conjuring up is the two of us driving between Dallas and San Antonio and singing and clapping to this song like little kids. So, you know...it's all good. I wonder what that lunatic is up to these days? He's probably out there stumping for Sarah Palin or something. *puke*

Don't judge me - I was young!

What's new, f-list?
melcreada: (british accents rock)

Many thanks to dear [livejournal.com profile] whitereflection  for the delicious fruit! ♥ I am mad-craving some fresh-cut fruit and that's no lie...

Work continues to be mostly horrible, although in the depths of our great frustration and despair, we have some great, semi-hysterical laughs. So, uh...yay?

I wish I had news, but I have been living at work. I did find out who will be performing at our Christmas party: Darius Rucker (from Hootie & the Blowfish) and Band From TV. Pretty nifty, yeah? The only bummer is that the party takes place during my vacay and I was hoping to go see Nay-nay. I'll have to see if I can go visit her the weekend before.

Wow, I am putting myself to sleep. How sad.

Good night, all.
melcreada: (christmas lupin doujin)
I haven't been commenting on a lot of posts and for that, I FAIL. I am thinking of you guys and I am reading, just so you knows...

We went to the company Christmas party, which was nice. REO Speedwagon had lots of energy and got the crowd all revved up. Saw a handful of people we knew, ate too much, and listened to a couple of the band's big hits, and beat it out of there. With the exception of my poor feet (high-heeled boots for the lose!) it was a successful evening!

Earlier today I went to the Kona Grill with the girls for sashimi, sake, and gossip. It was an educational lunch as well since I learned what a McDonald's McGangBang was.

...

Oh, yeah - meme time!

Day 02 → Your favorite movie

I went back on forth on this, but in the end I have to go with Whisper of the Heart. It's funny and poignant and painful, just like middle school. I can see myself in Shizuku at that age and I wish I had met a nice, handsome boy who made violins. Bonus that one of the main plot points revolve around John Denver's Country Roads, one of my favorite songs ever. It's a movie I never get tired of and it makes me nostalgic and wistful as well as happy and hopeful. I will say this movie beat out Fellowship of the Rings by a very, very thin margin...
melcreada: (ouran bitch please)

I had a whole angry post about the vitriolic town halls and the swastika graffiti on a congressman's office sign, but when every other word in said post is a variation on the words "dumb" and "fuck," I figured maybe I should calm down a bit before posting my reflections.

*ahem*

So anyhoo, t-mobile, after busting my balls for the last 6 months by rejecting again and again my emails requesting that my bill go paperless, FINALLY made it a selection on their website. Before you had to request it on the site, then reply to an email they sent you within a 24-hour period, and go on some sort of scavenger hunt or something. Way to go, dumbfucks.

See what I did there? I am so crabby.

In other bitchy news, I started my period today AND I had an all-day class that involved standing up and sitting down a lot, oh joy. PMS was in full force, let me tell you. Still, I got a lot of nice compliments from my current and former team members when it came time for the positive coaching exercise. Go me, god-dammit.

And, finally, a meme I have stolen from the lovely [profile] ellen_drell  to take my mind off...things:

The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books here. How do your reading habits stack up?

There be books here! )
melcreada: (drinky! yay!)
This week at work=insanity. For some reason, we are crazy-busy. Not that I am complaining...it's just weird.

And speaking of work, I should re-tool my resume but I think I need someone else to look at it. It's gotten to the point where it looks fine to me, but that is probably because I have written and re-written the damn thing 20 times. Bore-iiiing!!!

This weekend is our Sparkling 4th of July Houston Weekend (I thought that title up all by myself). We will be staying in Galveston (along with, what I expect will be the entire population of Texas, anxious to escape to the beach for the weekend). We are going to see David Cook (YAY) and poke around Moody Gardens and NASA (rawk) and I. Am. Going. To. A. Lush. Store. Finally - I have never been and cannot wait!

Oh yeah, and if it isn't too scuzzy, we might even visit the beach!

I will not let the fact that I just started my period OR the fact that the monstrous growth rate of my hair has made my cute new 'do look all shaggy (and I am not about to start getting trims every 2 weeks...grrr) break-a my stride! Nobody's gonna slow me down, oh no! I got to keep on moving!

David Cook! Fireworks! Millions of people on the highways...all around me...smothering me...

Okay, stopping now. Have a good night, everyone!

I got this?

melcreada: (chill the fuck out obama says)

I couldn't sleep last night. My anxiety is starting to piss me off.

Cut because the whining just doesn't stop! )

*le sigh*

In other news, I made some awesome spaghetti marinara tonight, with grilled Italian turkey sausage and fresh sauteed veggies. Yummy! I have leftovers for days.

I spent my work day tied to my desk at home, swamped and irritable. Yes, it was a Monday!

The good news is that I washed all the dishes, am planning a quick run to the grocery store, and then...laundry!!! I can do this because I am off tomorrow. Hooray!

Now, I am going to drive away in my jeep and take a minute just to breathe...
melcreada: (marie antoinette le hangover)
Had fun with the girls last night, although either they are wussies or I am an alcoholic. Jury is still out on that one. We went to Chacho's and had margaritas and a pizza-pan of nachos (so good, OMG!). It was karaoke night and that in and of itself was pretty damn hilarious. There was one little Mexican thug who kept getting up to sing (if you can call it that) and dance to Lil Wayne songs. Hee!

I worked a little this afternoon and it was nice to actually get a project done with absolutely no interruptions. *sigh*

And, no matter what your beliefs on the matter, the fact that a person who claims to be pro-life walked into a church and killed Dr. Tiller (late term abortion doctor) is both ironic and tragic. The whole issue makes me so sad.

Wot, wot?!

One good thing about the swine flu: I get to work from home for the next two days. Let's hear it for 'social distancing!'

I am sooo working in my PJs...
melcreada: (audio pink)

Teehee. Stayed home today. VPN-ed in for a little bit, but now I am surfing the interwebs, drooling over new cell phones. I am particularly admiring the pink Black Jack II and the fact that AT&T gives my company a discount on the service is making it VERY tempting...

I love "dream" shopping...

And later, JP and I are going to go see Dragonball Evolution. LOL!

melcreada: (kare kano glamour mel-style)

Survived the wedding. Thanks for all your well wishes, everyone! *hugs*

Now, I am just here waiting for the software engineer and project manager to call so I can log in and start working (yay, OT and differential!). Working in my pajamas! Truly, we live in a great age...

Anyway, have a meme courtesy of the most excellent [livejournal.com profile] annearchy !

Your result for The Elemental Beauty Test...

Etheral Beauty

50% Water, 17% Earth, 33% Air, and 0% Fire!

You scored 50% Water! Superb!

You have the etheral beauty of a god or goddess. You love things that shine and shimmer, are soft and flowy, and have a dreamy quality about them. You gravitate toward natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk, or hemp. You love the colors of the sea like the deep blues and sea-greens. You love the see-through sheer fabrics that you can layer, or perhaps loose shirts and pants when you seek the comfy side.

You inner beauty shows a sentimental side. You have keepsakes and heirlooms and love things that have emotional attachments or a history.

With water emotions run deep. It is a feeling sign. (Astrologically signs for this include Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.) Your emotions can be like a hidden treasure hidden below the surface in the subconcious. This may cause you to have some mood swings. But the beauty of what you are is that you will, in spite of fears, look inside yourself.

You also scored:

17% Earth: Earth is the natural beauty. They tend to stick to classic styles and colors. They tend to be more grounded. 0% Earth may indicate that plain old common sense is not your strong suit. Even percentages between Earth and Water indicate someone that is a hard worker that requires security and an attachment to possessions.

33% Air: Air is the fearless beauty. They are offbeat and funny. The mix old fashions with new and love to make new trends. They aren't afraid to be new or crazy. 0% Air could indicate that you have trouble looking at things objectively. Even percentages between Water and Air usually indicate a dreamer-typer person who tend to be fantasy prone.

0% Fire: Fire is the alluring beauty. They like to wear bright colors and show some skin. They are sexually minded and spicy. They use a lot of charm to get what they want. 0% Fire can often be seen in someone that pushes and tries to force self-expression. Equal percentages of Water and Fire show a person that is rather impulsive and shows a great deal of emotion.

I am mad-craving cake right now. I could get off my lazy ass and make those banana cupcakes with chocolate icing that I have been planning for like a month now, but it's Sunday night and I just don't feel like it. Business idea #366: Cake/dessert delivery service. It's a good thing I don't have the money to be an entrepreneur - I'd go broke in no time! LOL!

In other news, at work they are subsidizing the "My Helper" program where, for a small fee, you can get someone to go grocery shopping for you, take your car to get tuned up, and even plan your vacation. The "helpers" are all bonded and have to go through a thorough background check, so you PROBABLY won't get an axe murderer or anything. I won't lie, I am sooooo tempted to try it. However, the shame of having someone run my errands for me when I don't have a good reason for not running them myself is holding me back. But I hate the grocery store real bad! Decisions, decisions.

This morning, JP and I went to see Outlander, which is not nearly as bad as the plot makes it sound (spaceman vs. other alien creature in the time of Vikings). It stars that hot guy who played Jesus in Passion of the Christ. Good to know he is still getting work. It's like Lord of the Rings meets The 13th Warrior and they have a hootenanny with Predator and Beowulf. I liked it, though even though some of it didn't make a lot of sense. It was worth the $4. And, you know, any excuse to eat popcorn.

Okay, I'm off to watch some Ouran, season 2 (huzzah!).

melcreada: (cupcake)

My plan to sleep in has been thwarted by a barage of text messages from work. A couple of questions, but mainly funny little notes wishing me happy birthday, etc. Aw!

Okay, this is like the third straight day of FOG in San Antonio. It's warm, muggy weather out. Better than the insane amounts of snow others seem to be getting at the moment, though (8 inches? Really?!).

Heh, heh - I am buying Loreena McKennitt's Christmas album right now. ^____^

I still wish I could go see Cook and Weiland in Las Vegas but as long as I can catch it on TV or someone gets some good audio/video of the event, I am satisfied.

OMG - it's nearly Christmas!!!

Also, I am not turning forty quite yet, but this poem is fabulous and still applies. ♥

Turning Forty

At times it's like there is a small planet
inside me. And on this planet,
there are many small wars, yet none
big enough to make a real difference.
The major countries—mind and heart—have
called a truce for now. If this planet had a ruler,
no one remembers him well. All
decisions are made by committee.
Yet there are a few pictures of the old dictator—
how youthful he looked on his big horse,
how bright his eyes.
He was ready to conquer the world.

- Kevin Griffith

I have decided to try and take a few Fridays off this summer, assuming they are still open. I deserve it, I love three-day weekends as a short-term recharge, and it's gonna be suuuuuummer!

I feel like I should take a class or something. Maybe learn...um...something to do with cooking or replacing a motherboard? Or maybe not.

And finally, to cheer everyone up, I bring you another cat picture! I can't help it - Kyo is so cute! Here is my favorite one-eyed kitty tearing into toy mouse #2732.
