melcreada: (nana pretentious bitch)

JP and I have been watching Ghost Hunters all night and now are too scared to sleep.

WHERE THE HELL DID HE GO?!?!

*peers down the hallway*

Okay, while I sit here and be scared: meme stolen from everybody! Let's see how privileged I was growing up...I thought for sure I could not answer in the affirmative for any of this, but I was wrong!

Bold statements that are true

1. Father went to college
2. Father finished college

3. Mother went to college
4. Mother finished college
5. Have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor. (my cousin is a lawyer)
6. Were the same or higher class than your high school teachers. (what does this even mean? I'm gonna say no because several of my teachers were actually well off, drove BMWs and had spouses that owned successful businesses and whatnot. Almost all of them had their kids in private school or in the nicer public ones.)
7. Had more than 50 books in your childhood home. (not quite)
8. Had more than 500 books in your childhood home.
9. Were read children's books by a parent.
10. Had lessons of any kind before you turned 18. (swimming lessons when I was 9 - we spent half the year in either pools or the ocean...it seemed like a good idea)
11. Had more than two kinds of lessons before you turned 18.
12. The people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively. (Um, are they talking about my race? Because I don't talk or dress like many of the Mexicans I know, so...)
13. Had a credit card with your name on it before you turned 18.
14. Your parents (or a trust) paid for the majority of your college costs.
15. Your parents (or a trust) paid for all of your college costs.
16. Went to a private high school
17. Went to summer camp.
18. Had a private tutor before you turned 18
19. Family vacations involved staying at hotels. (does the Motel 6 count?)
20. Your clothing was all bought new before you turned 18. (My sister was 9 years older than me and half my size. :( )
21. Your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them
22. There was original art in your house when you were a child
23. You and your family lived in a single-family house.
24. Your parent(s) owned their own house or apartment before you left home
25. You had your own room as a child
26. You had a phone in your room before you turned 18
27. Participated in a SAT/ACT prep course. (the free one they offered at school)
28. Had your own TV in your room in high school
29. Owned a mutual fund or IRA in high school or college
30. Flew anywhere on a commercial airline before you turned 16
31. Went on a cruise with your family.
32. Went on more than one cruise with your family
33. Your parents took you to museums and art galleries as you grew up. (at my insistence, LOL!)
34. You were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family. (From a very young age, it was impressed upon me that the four of us were damn expensive. Dad used to yell at us if we were in the shower too long and we were not allowed to touch the thermostat. We knew exactly how much everything cost.)

Let's not forget the copyright: this lovely meme is based on an exercise about class and privilege developed by Will Barratt, Meagan Cahill, Angie Carlen, Minnette Huck, Drew Lurker, Stacy Ploskonka at Illinois State University. But I thought of it first. ^_~

I can't watch ghost shows alone! For some reason ghosts in mirrors and windows freak me out the most.

That's an interesting meme! I am priviledged and I know I am lucky, but I think some of those come down to taste. Some people are a lower income class, but love reading, or for some families it is worth saving over two years to take one cruise, or a plane ride somewhere. Anyways I have been mulling over this since I got into work this morning.

The thing that got me on the show was one episode where they were asking if the ghost's name was Jean and a voice was caught on tape that sounded as if it were saying, "There is no Jean here."

Talk about goosebumps! Then another recording sounded like, "Just leave us alone." It made me sad. :(

The meme is kinda random. Like, it didn't even ask if you had hired help growing up (which we did, in the Philippines). It specifically said "commercial airline" and I went overseas, but on government planes. We never took a cruise, but we went on plenty of family vacations. Sure, we stayed in cheap motels and never ate in restaurants but they were still vacations!

Still, it was a neat little exercise. I like to think I had it hard sometimes, growing up in a big family, but overall I had it pretty sweet. LOL!

I saw that episode! The EVPs freak me out the most, probably because I'm an auditory freak-out person. Wow, we are so similar! Seems like I'm always reading your lj and saying out loud, "Oo, oo, I watched that too!!" I'm so addicted to Ghost Hunters because, well, I'm addicted to ghosts. Once again, just ask [livejournal.com profile] wonderelf. #^-^# I was excited to see that the show is on DVD, although I don't know if I love the show enough to buy 'em. I'm content with watching re-runs when I'm not working Wednesday nights.

Hmm, I guess going by that meme I'm privileged, too. But I agree with you guys; when people love something they figure out how to spend money on it. When I was in high school, I didn't have a job and had a pretty piddly allowance. But I still managed to spend quite a bit on manga and anime. Okay, not tons and tons, but still a lot compared to what I was bringing in, hehe.

Yes! The EVPs are the creepiest! Did you see the St. Augustine episode? The original video they shot there made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

LOL...we are going to have to have a good chat about all the reality TV we watch. *grin*
