Drunk baking while watching Holiday Inn (omg, black face!!!). Pictures later. Of the baking. Not the black face.

melcreada: (christmas lights)

Speaking of "drive-by" reminds me of how, back in the high school, someone shot at Nay-nay's car and apparently she told her parents she was at my house (when in fact she was out with her boyfriend). So for years, her parents eyed me with distrust and never wanted her to go over to my house. She finally came clean (20 years later!) to all of us and I laugh every time I think of it, although I guess I should be kinda mad.

The most disturbing part of that story is that I didn't really consider the fact that someone shot at my bestie a big deal...high school was a fairly violent time - gangs beating the Hell out of each other at parties, guys pulling knives and brass knuckles out when they fought in the school courtyard. I remember being at a party once and someone firing several shots into the house. And when we left that night, all the tires of the cars on that street had been slashed. Wow, I guess my school was a little ghetto. Go me for not turning into a chola (gang girl), LOL!

ANYWAY, I just came in here to say that I wish to make darling desserts in jars as Christmas gifts for the extended familia, but apparently no one in San Antonio cans and preserves anymore because I have looked and looked and cannot find damned jelly jars! I guess I can order them, but what a pain. Though it will be worth it if I can pull this off (trust me, they won't be that pretty):

I do not think I can adequately convey how tired I am. Maybe if I posted a picture of a deflated tire...

Big news at work which I will discuss later. Suffice it to say that the Bukowski was right - the gods will offer you chances. Know them. Take them.

Maybe.

Tomorrow is our god-damned holiday cookie exchange, so I just made 8 dozen chocolate-peppermint sugar cookies:

Will someone please tell me what the Hell I am going to do with 8 dozen cookies?! LOL...

Dinner time! I'm getting pretty good at making these...

melcreada: (all this bullshit)
I would have updated this weekend but I was curled up on the couch, praying for Death's sweet release.

I dunno...cut because I talk about my girly business... )

The good thing about not wanting to move around much is that I got a fair amount of reading done. I zoomed through Goblet of Fire and am just about through with Order of the Phoenix. This is my third go through the Harry Potter series and I love it as much as I ever did (although I never realized how often Hermione moaned - kinky!).

Work is always work and one minute I am being hailed as awesome and the next, I am being spoken to like the village idiot. I hate that BTW - if you ever really want to piss me off, be as patronizing as possible. You will see my eyeballs boil in their sockets and have the satisfaction of seing Pretentious Mel get her betch on.

I think I am going to have pancakes for dinner. I used to love it when my dad would make us pancakes for dinner...it always felt like we were being bad! LOL.
melcreada: (Mighty Boosh - ice flow nowhere to go!)

Things I Did
- Drank lots of alcohol
- Watched/re-watched all 3 seasons of The Mighty Boosh
- Went shopping
- Saw Friends with Benefits (funny, but could have used a serious edit) and Captain America (better the second time around, really good!)

Things I Did Not Do
- Clean my closet
- Take the bags of stuff I trip over daily to Good Will
- Call my doctor to pay this stupid bill because the only way I can pay via credit card is over the phone (how safe)
- Schedule someone to come out and look at my shower because I think it is leaking
- Start on any of the other half dozen home projects that need taking care of

Priorities, I do not haz them.

I did, however, make a smashing good lasagna! It was very yummy but the thing about lasagna is that you can't really make a small one (or at least, I can't). So I know what we will be eating for the next few days...
melcreada: (three amigos plethora of pinatas)
Is it weird to anyone but me that so many store/restaurant web sites make you hunt and click every blessed link to find their freaking hours??? I exempt national chains from this because of sheer quantity, but even at that, when I click on the information for a particular store, how about listing their hours next to the directions and phone number? Some places just don't list them at all which absolutely boggles my mind. I know I can call them, but often I am immediately put on hold and, on more than one occasion, given the wrong time anyway! It's a silly little thing that annoys me when I go online to look up store info. Blegh.

We saw Morning Glory and it is an excellent movie! Well-written, well-acted, funny, and touching. I love stories set in the broadcasting or newspaper business. Go see it, you will love it. Promise.

In cool news, David Sedaris had a book reading/signing at one of the Borders in town and we went. There were quite a few people, but he took his time with every person. Which is fantastic, yet incredibly tedious. I haven't read any of his books, with the exception of a few essays/stories, but I like what he does and enjoyed his talk. JP stood in line to get his book signed and got to meet him, so that was neat.

In other news, during my week off (WOO!), I plan on:

1. Taking my defensive driving class online
2. Starting my Christmas shopping
3. Making some blackberry cordial (I AM EXCITE! ABOUT THIS)
4. Sleeping
5. Family/friends/day trips/yadda yadda

melcreada: (cake full of woe)

Jack cake for potluck tomorrow. I definitely need some sort of decorating classes. Red velvet cake with white icing.

I had MAD craving for something sweet, so I made chocolate cupcakes with melted chocolate on top. Shiny! Most will go to work tomorrow. Most.

Oh and "Reverand" Terry Jones can DIAF. That is all.

Well it took the better part of three hours, but I made beef bourguignon and it is delicious! And cheap! I used about $3 worth of stew meat, various veggies, and a $2 bottle of cabernet sauvignon (thank you, liquor outlet store) to whip it up. Ugh. So full, though.

I, er...don't actually have a recipe #2 but I might try and make some gingerbread cakes tomorrow and then my candied yams for Thanksgiving.

Also, I burned my tongue. Suck.

Tonight is the museum again and My Neighbor Totoro! Yay!
melcreada: (chill the fuck out obama says)

Busy, busy, busy.

I have been working mad hours all week (including yesterday) and I need a breather!

In spite of my crazy work, we managed to get out and see GI Joe (which is about as good as you would expect it to be) and Julie & Julia (which was charming and funny and made me really, really, really want to cook more).

I am so excited because JP and I are going to the Star Wars in Concert show this October. The nerd in me is very happy right now. ^____^

I am also planning other trips this fall because I am made of money! No, not really. But dammit - I deserve some fun times! All around me is doom and gloom: my yard is dead thanks to the drought-like conditions, my house is snap-crackling-and popping, due to shifting (also connected to the drought). I have been constantly threatened with cutbacks and lay offs at work since the summer started. People are screaming at each other every time I turn on the news. It's bad times. So, what can a person do but party?

I mean, sure, it's probably not the smart thing to do. I might even come to regret it. But. I am sick of being scared. Sick of worrying. Sick of the whole damn thing. I am going to enjoy myself this fall. Hell yeah.

Well, I thought it would be kind of neat to make dinner tonight. I saw a lovely and simple recipe on the Food Network website so I scurried off to the grocery store for a couple of ingredients (one of which I forgot because I started leafing through the Hairstyle magazines up front).

And here is the account:

7:05 - boil pasta (easy)
7:10 - chop garlic and tomatoes. Damn! Forgot the red pepper flakes.
7:20 - sautee garlic (hmmm...garlic looks a bit mushy and yellow. Ew.)
7:30 - finish very simple sauce of squishy tomatoes, garlic, and basil. Proceed to toss it with some pasta.
7:33 - Hmmm...needs salt.
7:36 - Give up pretending to like what I made and start eating the plain pasta straight from the colander
7:40 - Bust out the picante sauce and continue to eat pasta dipped in hot sauce.

I am very, very sad. But at least I can laugh about it. Sort of.

Am tired and don't want to go back to work. I've had so many days off that my mind is quasi-convinced that I'm on vacation. Tomorrow will be a rude awakening.

Been kinda down in the dumps today. I think all the rain and fog might have something to do with it.

Finished updating my cel gallery. Woo! But the latest scans seem to reinforce my theory that the scanner is on its last legs. Should start shopping around to price a new one.

Hee! Well, who am I to argue?! This cheered me up:
