melcreada: (sm - paradise lost)

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Y'all know who y'all are. ♥ ♥ ♥

JP made me watch the first episode of Darkplace and I found it disturbingly enjoyable. It is so...odd and awkward. LOL...

So. Hungry.
melcreada: (three amigos plethora of pinatas)

It seems like a lot of y'all in LJ land are having a hard week. I wish I could reach out through the interwebs and give you guys a great big hug.

*HUGS*

In other news, I just got Sarah McLachlan tickets! She is coming to Austin in November and  I AM EXCITE!!!! I haven't seen her since the Afterglow tour, so woohoo!!!

In honor of this, I bring you iTunes shuffle meme with questions... )
melcreada: (three amigos plethora of pinatas)

Today was a much better day! I got to leave work early and spent the afternoon...napping. I am so productive! Also, JP got his telescope in the mail today and it looks awesome! Can't wait to try it out...

Many thanks and a HUGE *hug* to [livejournal.com profile] whitereflection  for the delicious dessert waffle! Omnomnom!

And, as requested, here ya go, flist - please to be telling me about yourself with this meme! ^_~

28 Questions... )
melcreada: (witchy)

Embarrassing confession #1,907: I love Miley Cyrus' song Party in the USA. The other day I mentioned it to one of the girls at work, who promptly whipped the headphone jack out of her iphone to show me that she was listening to that very song. And then, one of the other girls heard the music and came running up to show us her iphone that was playing the music video to it. I thought it was pretty funny. And maybe a little sad, but mostly funny. I am mainly an indie/90s grunge/singer-songwriter kinda gal, but I like Top 40 music, too - it's usually popular for a reason.

So, there you have. Another dirty little secret. *^___^*

And now, here is a meme I have been too lazy to post until now:

1. Write your memoir in six words.

Did nothing, enjoyed it all anyway.

2. What would you change about your undergrad?

I would have picked what I loved, English or History. My "practical" degree did not help me one bit in my "career" and I had a Hell of a time getting through the upper level microbiology classes.

3. How do you view your own personal spirituality?

It's a blend, I think, of how I was raised (sorta Catholic) and what I picked up along the way (try not to be a bitch, especially when the situation really calls for it). If I had the time, I would spend idle afternoons watching clouds or sitting by the ocean. That's my idea of spirituality.

4. What is your favorite comfort food?

Refried beans and tortillas (do NOT tell me mother). Growing up, it seemed like no matter what the main course was, the side dishes were always beans, rice, and tortillas. I swore, with bitter certainty, that the moment I left home, I would NEVER eat beans and rice again. Now, sometimes, the craving is so sharp, I have to laugh at myself. But smearing some beans in a warm tortilla take me right back into my parent's kitchen, where someone was always cooking and my siblings were always arguing and laughing, and somehow, I belonged. Which is a nice feeling.

5. What is one thing that scares you, that you think you should do?

Quit my job.
melcreada: (miss china)

San-Japan was good, especially for a fledgling con. We had a small but enthusiastic cel panel. JP got to pal around with Dean Venture's voice actor. I was (am still) insanely enraged at the Marriott for having the gall to tell me that if I wanted a cart to haul our suitcases full of cels downstairs, it would cost me $25-30. I am assuming that was for a round trip, but who knows for sure? Marriott is gonna hear from me, though. If I am going to tip the bell boy (the cart comes with) for each trip, what the fuck do they care?! Does the bell boy have something else to do besides hang outside the hotel smoking cigarettes and telling dirty jokes? From my observation, the answer is NO.

But otherwise, fun times. We donated a couple of cels for the charity auction that went for over $200 total and that made me really happy. But the Marriott can still suck it.

Sweet (and also, really?):

Ah, the kind of memes I looove (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] wordsthatfail !)

When you see this meme, post a poem on your LJ

The Benjamin Franklin of Monogamy
by
Jeffrey McDaniel

Reminiscing in the drizzle of Portland, I notice the ring
that’s landed on your finger, a massive insect

of glitter, a chandelier shining at the end of a long tunnel.
Thirteen years ago, you hid the hurt under the blanket

of your voice, said I guess there's two kinds of women.
Those you write poems about, and those you don’t.

It’s true. I never slid sonnets under the door, or served you
haiku in bed. My idea of courtship was tapping

Jane's Addiction lyrics in Morse code on your window
at three hundred a.m., whiskey doing push-ups

on my breath. I worked within the confines of my character,
cast as the bad boy in your life, the Magellan

of your dark side. We don't have a past so much as a bunch
of electricity, power never put to good use. What

we had together makes it sound like a virus, as if
we caught one another like a flu, and desire was merely

a symptom that could be treated with soup and lots of sex.
Gliding beside you now, I feel like the Ben Franklin

of monogamy, as if I invented it, but I'm still not immune
to your waterfall scent, haven't developed antibodies

for your smile. I don't know long regret existed
before humans hammered a word on it, or how many

paper towels it would take to wipe up the Pacific Ocean,
or why the light of a candle being blown out

travels faster than the luminescence of one that's freshly lit,
but I do know all our huffing and puffing

into the other's throat--as if the heart was a birthday cake
covered with trick candles--didn't make the silence

any easier to navigate. I'm sorry all the kisses I scribbled
on your neck were written in disappearing ink, sorry

this poem took thirteen years to reach you. Sometimes
I thought of you so hard one of your legs would pop out

of my ear, and when I slept, you'd press your face
against the porthole of my submarine. I wish that just once,

instead of joyriding over flesh, we'd put our hands away
like chocolate to be saved for later, and deciphered

the calligraphy of each other's eyelashes, translated
a paragraph from the volumes of what couldn’t be said.

Am feeling a little better today, so that's nice.

A lovely distraction - thank you, [livejournal.com profile] annearchy !

Shag meme! )

melcreada: (neal - singing)

Ah, yes...so much for going to bed early. Fail, Mel. Fail.

But must do meme.

Day 24 → Whatever tickles your fancy

So, I know I don't mention it much, but I am a bit of a Sherlock Holmes fangirl. Not a good one - I only read the stories once, as a little girl and only because my dad asked me to. But I have loved the character and almost all the adaptations I've seen: the silly, the teenage fantasy, the definitive. So when the new shoot-em-up "now with cage fighting!" version came along, I was interested but definitely prepared to be disappointed.

Well! Was I ever wrong! I loved Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. He is a warmer, more human character (still brilliant, but a total mess). And his Watson! I love his characterization as Watson, Man of Action! He kept pace with Holmes and took care of him and whether you read hoyay! into their relationship or not, there bond is absolutely wonderful. They play off each other and bicker and the give and take just works so well. So, in conclusion: great movie, can't wait to see it again, I think I may be slightly in love with Guy Ritchie's version of the Holmes/Watson dynamic. Oh, and also: they are very pretty to look at. Hubba, hubba.

melcreada: (impudent strumpet)

I need to start going to bed earlier...for serious.

Okay, let's get this meme on the road!

Day 23 → A YouTube video (Holy Hell, seven more days to go!)

Okay, one cannot just go to YouTube and pick a video and be done. One must peruse the sight, weigh the pros and cons, etc.

So, somehow I got to thinking about dancing and So You Think You Can Dance and I started looking for my favorite routines. And I realized that many of the pieces I connected to were done by Mia Michaels.

Now, I have this love/hate thing going on with a lot of contemporary choreography. I love the storytelling and the emotion, but so much of it just looks...sloppy. However, Mia's routines always look so sharp. They can be wrenching or funny or touchingly quirky. She is ruthless in demanding not only a certain level of honesty in her dancers, but a high level of technical ability and athleticism because that's what is in every routine. So, in conclusion: girl crush on Mia Michaels and her mad skills as a choreographer.
melcreada: (cake full of woe)

I am getting forgetful in my old age. I don't like it.

Also, I am awake and I should be asleep.

Aaannnnd: meme!

Day 22 → A website

I found Not Martha by accident, but I fell in love with it and this past Christmas, I even made some of the artsy-crafty stuff as gifties, like the magnets:

and also the wine charms:

That's right...I am a crafty bitch.

melcreada: (marie antoinette le hangover)

My weekend is almost gone and I have done nothing. I honestly don't know where people find time to clean their houses. I can fit in working, cooking, spending time with family, and shopping, but cleaning just gets away from me. I need more hours in the day. Or a maid. Hmmm.

Anyway, meme!

Day 21 → A recipe

The following is the original Berry Sangria recipe from the Olive Garden. Every time I make it (with a few alterations), I get rave reviews. So, enjoy!

    * 1 1/2 liters red table wine
    * 1 cup grenadine
    * 2 cups cranberry juice cocktail
    * 1 1/4 cups sweet vermouth
    * 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water mixed
    * strawberry, cut into thirds
    * orange, slice thin,then quartered
    * crushed ice

Directions

   1. This makes a gallon.
   2. Mix all the ingredients (except the ice)
   3. Let sit in refrigerator at least 4-5 hours, if not overnight.
   4. Pour sangria into serving glass, fruit and all, then add ice.

Notes
- I use Lambrusco, like the Olive Garden, but you can use any kind of red wine you want
- I cut the grenadine and the sugar water mixture in half because I think the original is too sweet
- I don't like letting it sit overnight because the wine loses its fizz and the fruit gets all mushy. A couple of hours is fine.
melcreada: (lupin dream)

I have been thinking about Sherlock Holmes all day today and wanting to see it again. This is a sign that I will be picking up the DVD as soon as they release it. ^____^

Another day, another meme. Wait. Actually, it's the same meme.

Day 20 → A hobby of yours

Although I no longer do it as much as I used to, I have been collecting animation cels for several years now. It started innocently enough with one or two purchases and before i knew it, BAM! It had hooked me. I love that you can own a piece of anime that is completely unique. Sometimes I buy things because they are from a favorite scene, but mostly I buy pretty stuff. LOL! This cel has a special significance since, technically, JP and I are together because of it. AWWWW...

melcreada: (neal so it goes)

I finally saw Sherlock Holmes tonight. I thought it was excellent! I mean, the story wasn't all that great and Rachel McAdams was not at her best, but I thought RDJ and Jude Law were fantastic. Even though they deviated in many, many ways from the characters in the book, the true spirit was there. Watson cut a much more dashing figure, but I can't complain about that. The easy comraderie and bits of hoyay! were just icing on the cake, so to speak. Although, I definitely don't remember any of THAT in The Hound of the Baskervilles...

Okay, meme time and then I have to get a snack as I am starving. Yet again.

Day 19 → A talent of yours

It ain't much, but I can bake a mean cupcake. I have yet to learn the secrets of great cake-making, but I got these little guys down pat. Yummy!

melcreada: (reality winter)

I had to lay the smackdown at work today. Felt good.

Also, Target is having a pretty good sale on Iam's cat food right now. This made me happy, as well as the sweet-ass discount the proprietor gave us on our dinner at Simi's Indian Restaurant. I love it when he does that. ^____^

Listening to Glen Hansard tell a poignant ghost story on the live tracks of the deluxe version of Strict Joy make me all wibbly and goose-bumpy. Why the audience is laughing at parts THAT ARE NOT FUNNY is baffling to me.

Okay, I am going to finish this meme (someday)!

Day 18 → Whatever tickles your fancy

I bought these darling boots that were 60% off at Amazon. I am going to totally rock them at work tomorrow for about 4 hours and then limp around for the rest of the day because that's how I break my shoes in. Yeah.

melcreada: (dc - holy shit)

I was a multi-tasking mofo at work today. Seriously, I can't have another day like that or I will go completely bonkers. So tired. It doesn't help that winter allergies have set up their yearly taiko drum symposium in my head. The constant pounding on my right temple and behind my right eye make me want to punch my own face.

Blargh.

Okay, meme!

Day 17 → An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)

Lily Martin Spencer, painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I just thought it was purty. Sorry about the glare.

melcreada: (bookstore)

Ah, work - thank you for not disappointing me, you sucked just as you always suck.

I have bought things I am not proud of at Barnes & Noble with my gift card. Oh, yes. Including this lovely gem that retells Pride & Prejudice if Darcy had been a vampire! No, I don't know why I do this to myself. I will consider therapy in the future...

Meme, meme, meme:

Day 16 → A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

Oh, geez. What song DOESN'T make me cry? For sheer longevity (this song has been making me cry for over 20 years), I choose Depeche Mode's It Doesn't Matter. I mean, seriously. I think I spent most of my Sophmore year snork-crying to this song. Oy. Nothing takes me back faster to hopeless crushes and drawn-out break ups, and horrible teenage heartache like this song.

Honorable mention goes to Letters From Home by John Michael Montgomery (I knowwww but seriously, if you have ever had someone in harm's way like that, listen to the lyrics and you will snork-cry too!), and basically any Christmas carol that mentions Jesus, angel voices, or peace on Earth. Yeah, I tear up whenever I sing The First Noel or Come All Ye Faithful. No one wants to carol with me anymore...

Falllllll on your kneeeeeeees....

The Kid and I rediscovered IM and it's good to see we are as stupid as ever!

Where we talk about visiting, bad Van Damme movies, and the homeless )

Also, there is a meme (yes, still!):

Day 15 → A fanfic

Tried and true, my favorite fanfic of all time is the wonderful Shoebox Project: a hilarious and lovingly crafted story of the Marauders in the HP-verse. The main author started writing original fiction and getting published, so I'm sure this longstanding project isn't high on her to do list, but the story is fantastic and includes photographs (like the one below) and handwritten notes. If you have any interest in the Marauders, you need to check this one out. Sometimes I forget this story isn't canon - that is how good and right it all is. ^___^

melcreada: (amadeus)

So, I guess it's time for resolutions, eh?

2010 Resolutions

1. Go back to the freaking gym. Also, use new home workout equipment to, you know, work out.
2. Clean this house up. For reals.
3. Write something every day (prepare yourself for more journal entries, y/n?)

That should do for now. Back to everyone's favorite, the never-ending meme!!!

Day 14 → A non-fictional book

I am currently enjoying this book that is part memoir and part instructional manual. I don't think Stephen King will ever be one of my favorite authors, but there is no doubt that he is an incredibly gifted writer. This book rocks.

melcreada: (christmas candles)

Nothing new, but the days are starting to blend together, which is kind of nice. I am on vacation, after all. No plans for New Years, except snacks and probably several episodes of Venture Brothers and maybe Big Bang Theory, season 2 ($17 at Target!). I have a bottle of Prosecco and a bottle of Asti. La, la, la...

The meme: whoop, there it is...

Day 13 → A fictional book

I have been thinking of this book a lot lately, even though I haven't read it in years. The language is so beautiful:

"Your name is a golden bell hung in my heart. I would break my body to pieces, to call you once by your name."

And my favorite, by Molly Grue:

"And where were you twenty years ago? Ten years ago? Where were you when I was new? When I was one of those innocent young maidens you always come to? How dare you! How dare you come to me now, when I am this!"
melcreada: (christmas berries)

I am never paying my HOA fees online again. It has been one huge headache and it's still not over yet. If I actually still had checks, this wouldn't be such a big deal but seriously! I haven't had a checkbook for five years. I thought paying online would be easier. Lesson learned. Ugh.

We saw Avatar last night and it was gorgeous and engrossing. A truly spectacular visual event and a good story to boot. The theater (3D Imax) was PACKED so I was glad we had reserved seats. It is a testament to how good it was when I heard nary a peep out of people throughout the whole thing. An unheard of experience, let me tell you. Usually, JP has to yell for someone to shut up at least once. Heh.

Anyhoo, meme!

Day 12 → Whatever tickles your fancy

This is a painting I fell in love with and purchased yesterday. It is going above my bed. It is a MONSTER, about 5 feet long and 3 feet tall. But the minute I saw it, I thought of Alan Lee and Fellowship of the Rings and all manner of loney beauty. Can't wait...think I might have to put a headboard on my bed to support it, though. I'm not sure I want it just hanging over my noggin. Death from above!
